Acquire, enter, or update an EFILE number and password in ProFile

Be sure to update your EFILE password with the CRA and follow the steps below to update the password in-product.

Acquire an EFILE number and password from the CRA

Note: If any steps are skipped, it won't be possible to EFILE.

This process is undertaken by customers installing ProFile, starting a new tax year, or update an existing EFILE number and password.

ProFile users must apply online to the CRA for an EFILE number and password; information on the application process can be found here.

Following a successful application, the CRA provides a user number and password.

Enter the EFILE number and password into ProFile

Note: To make EFILE safer and help prevent customers from making mistakes, a new CRA rule requires customers to enter their EFILE password twice in ProFile.

Once you have your EFILE number and password from the CRA, follow these steps to add them to ProFile:

  1. Open ProFile.
  2. Select Set EFILE Password from the EFILE dropdown.

  1. When the EFILE Wizard window opens, select Next.
  2. Enter the EFILE number and password.
  3. Enter your EFILE password again.

Note: The password is case-sensitive and must be entered as it was provided.

  1. Select Next.
  2. Enter your Quebec NetFile number and access code, if you have them, then select Next. If you aren't preparing Quebec returns, leave these blank and select Next.

  1. If preparing Quebec returns, enter again your CRA EFILE number. Otherwise, leave the field blank. Select Next.

  1. Select Finish.

Update the EFILE number and password

Confirm the correct password via the CRA website

Note: if you are unable to sign in to the CRA website, it is likely due to an invalid password.

Navigate to the CRA EFILE for electronic filers site.

Select EFILE Sign in and sign in using your credentials.

Update in ProFile

  1. Go to the EFILE in the menu bar and select Options...
  2. Select the EFILE Internet option under the T1 menu on the left-side.
  3. Enter, or enter again the EFILE number and password in the two fields, EFILE On-Line Number and EFILE Online Password.
  4. Select OK.

Save options package (if applicable)

It is necessary to save over the current options package in order for ProFile to remember that you have changed the password. Follow this process only if you use an options package.

  1. Select Options Administration... from the Options dropdown in the top toolbar. The Options Administration window displays.
  2. Make sure your options package is selected. Select Save.
  3. Select OK.
