Preparing a deceased taxpayer's final return in ProFile

by Intuit Updated 1 month ago

Complete a return for a deceased taxpayer who is single

Enter the date of death in the Production section of the deceased taxpayer's Info form.

Complete a return for a deceased taxpayer who is married

  1. Enter the date of death in the Taxpayer personal information section of the deceased taxpayer's info form.
  2. ProFile will know this is a Final return when a date of death is entered. ProFile will also update the Marital status section of the surviving spouse's return. No entries in the Marital status section are required on either return after the date of death is entered.
  3. Preparers will however need to confirm there are no further changes as of December 31 of the tax year.

Carry forward a coupled deceased return

When carrying forward a coupled file in which one spouse files a deceased return for the previous taxation year, ProFile automatically only carries forward the return for the surviving taxpayer.
