EFILE error #99173: Tax Shelter number or NAICS element is invalid

You might see the EFILE error 99173: Tax Shelter number or NAICS element is invalid. To fix this, follow these steps.

Resolution

A common cause for the error includes a T2125 exists and no tax shelter number has been entered. Enter a tax shelter number as a first troubleshooting effort.

If a tax shelter number has been entered

1. Open the Form Explorer.
2. Select Used in the left-side pane.
3. Check that there are no other T2125 issues listed (T2125#2, #3, etc.).
4. If there is, open that form and enter a tax shelter number.
5. Go to the Form menu and choose Clear form and then Delete form.

Coupled Return

If this is a coupled return and neither of the above applies:

1. Switch to the spouse return.
2. Open the Form Explorer.
3. Select Used in the left-side pane.
4. Check that there are no other T2125 issues listed (like T2125#2, #3, etc.).
5. If there is, open that form and either enter a tax shelter number.
6. Go to the Form menu and choose Clear form and then Delete form.
