Completing Child Care Expenses (Federal)

1. Navigate to the Child care expense details section of the Dependant form:

2. Select the dependant from the dropdown menu.
3. Enter the name or childcare provider of the dependant, followed by the SIN number (if applicable).
4. Enter the number of weeks of care (if applicable).
5. Enter the total amount of child care expenses for the year.

Completing Additional Child Care Expenses (Quebec)

1. Navigate to the Additional child care expense details for Quebec section of the Dependant form:

A computer terminal with numbers in a box.

2. The name of the dependant should automatically be populated. However, if changes are needed to the populated name, or there are additional dependants, select the applicable dependant(s) from the dropdown menu. Note that only up to 11 rows can be entered under Child Care Expenses. If there are more than 11 rows, you will need to combine entries on rows, to be able to electronically file the return.

3. Complete the RL-24 Box H section with the value from the RL-24 provided by Quebec. You may use the SIN of the babysitter/child care provider instead.

Note: The value in RL-24 Box H or SIN number of the child care provider is required to be eligible to NetFile the TP1.

4. Complete the non-eligible RL-24 Box D amount. This amount’s maximum is $125 for both Federal and Provincial.

Federal claims display on Line 9 on the T778 of the parent who is claiming the credit.

Provincial claims display on Line 39 under Section A of the TP1C.

Managing Errors

Managing an EDI error

You may encounter an EDI NetFile error on Line 39 of the TP1C:

A picture of a child's checksignature card and a parking meter.

This can occur if RL-24 Box H or the SIN number of the child care provider on the Dependant form is not completed.

Only up to 11 rows can be entered under Child Care Expenses. If there are more than 11 rows, you will need to combine entries on rows, to be able to electronically file the return.
