"Unrecognized file format" error in ProFile
by Intuit• Updated 4 weeks ago
An Unrecognized file format error displays when attempting to open a return that was created in a prior version of ProFile.
Resolution
- Open ProFile.
- Select the Check for Updates option from the Online dropdown menu.
- Follow the prompts to update ProFile to the latest version.
- Open the return again.
Run proreg if updating ProFile to the latest version isn't successful in reopening the return without an error:
- Exit ProFile.
- Right-click on the ProFile desktop icon and select Open file location. The Windows Explorer opens.
- Navigate to the folder C:/Program Files(x86)/ProFile.
- Locate the file proreg.exe in the folder.
- Right-click on the proreg.exe file and select the Run as administrator option.
- The ProFile Module Registration window displays.

- Select Clear all. The X in the boxes clear.
- When prompted, allow the UAC.
- Select Register all. The X in the boxes repopulates.
- Uncheck the GPShell.dll box.
- Close the ProFile Module Registration window.
- Open the return again.
Note: If a window asks you to open a T2 file in the latest module, answer Yes only if the return hasn't been done and filed with the CRA yet. Otherwise, answer No to avoid recalculation of the return in the new module.
