Obtaining Represent a Client (RAC) access

The information in this article is subject to change. For the latest information refer to CRA's EFILE news and program updates page.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is making changes starting July 15, 2025. The changes will modify the method of granting EFILE companies authorization to act on their behalf. This is also known as the process of obtaining Represent a Client (RAC) access.

You will no longer be able to obtain RAC access by submitting the Authorize a Representative form to the CRA via professional tax software using the EFILE service. Instead, individuals who require you to access their CRA account must give you permission through their CRA account.

Key Changes:

  • For Individuals: Starting July 15, 2025, the current Authorize a Representative service in EFILE software will no longer be available for Individuals.
  • For Businesses: This change won't impact authorization requests submitted through EFILE for Business clients.
  • For ProFile users: Starting July 15, 2025 when accountants try to request permission, CRA will send an error message saying the service is stopped. EFILE software is expected to display the same message.

How to obtain permission going forward?

  1. Individuals (with a CRA My Account): go into their CRA My Account and give you permission to represent them and provide tax information on their behalf. Note: First-time filers can’t access My Account until they have filed one tax return.
  2. Accountants: There's a new process for submitting an authorization through your Represent a Client (RAC) portal. For more information, go to this CRA article.
  3. Individuals (without a CRA My Account): go to the CRA’s website and follow the Document Verification Service steps to get access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to submit bulk requests for authorization?

No. There's currently no efficient procedure in place for accountants to obtain bulk authorizations for their clients.
