"Invalid character in free format area" error when trying to EFILE a T1 return in ProFile

When trying to EFILE a T1 return in ProFile, you may experience an Invalid character in free format area error.

Cause of the error

Usually this error is due to:

  • If the box has a negative amount where the amount is expected to be positive means the must be paper filed.
  • An incorrect Tax shelter identification number on form T2125.
  • Wrong characters (for example, %) $ @ ( # &) have been entered into a free format area, such as a taxpayer's personal information in the Personal Information page.

A 5-digit code comes with this message. The last 4 digits show the line number with the invalid character.

Resolving the error

To jump to the associated line:

  1. Navigate to Goto in the menu bar, and then select Line Number View. The Form Explorer opens in line number view.
  2. Enter the last 4 digits from the error.
  3. Select Enter.
  4. Resolve the error based on the cause in the section above.
