by Intuit Updated 1 year ago

When trying to EFILE a T1 return, an Invalid character in free format area error displays.

Cause of the error

Usually this error is due to:

  • An incorrect Tax shelter identification number on form T2125.
  • Invalid characters (for example, % ) $ @ ( # &) have been entered into a free format area, such as a taxpayer's personal information in the Personal Information page.

There will be a 5-digit code associated with this message. The last 4 digits are the line number with invalid character.
