Resolve an "Authentication Failed" error when using EFILE

ProFile customers may encounter an error message related to their credentials when trying to EFILE a T1 or T2 return.

The following is an example of the error message:

ProFile users can address this issue by deleting and re-entering the EFILE password information provided by CRA.

Confirm correct password via CRA website

Navigate to the CRA's EFILE for electronic filers website:

CRA EFile

Click the EFILE Login button and log in using your EFILE credentials.

Note: If you are unable to log in to the CRA website, it is likely due to an invalid password. The error message may also inform you that the account is locked, or another message. Contact the CRA to resolve the issue.

  1. Close ProFile.
  2. Right-click on the ProFile desktop icon and select the Run as administrator option.
  3. Select Options... from the EFILE drop-down menu in the top toolbar. The Electronic Filing Options menu displays.
  4. Select the EFILE Internet option under the T1 menu on the left-side.
  5. Delete any existing information in the EFILE On-Line Number and EFILE Online Password fields.

6. Click the OK button.

Review Options package (if applicable)

It is necessary to save over the current Options package in order for ProFile to remember that you have removed the password.

If you are not using an Options package, proceed to section Re-enter EFILE password below.

  1. Select Options Administration... from the Options drop-down menu in the top toolbar. The Options Administration window displays.
  2. Click the Save button; the options package is overridden.
  3. Click the OK button.

Re-enter EFILE password

  1. Close ProFile.
  2. Right-click on the ProFile desktop icon and select Run as administrator.
  3. Select Set EFILE password under the EFILE drop-down menu in the top toolbar. The EFILE wizard displays.
  4. Follow the prompts within the EFILE wizard to re-enter the EFILE password.

Note: The EFILE password is case-sensitive and should be entered as provided by the CRA.

Additional options

If using an Options package:

  1. Select Options Administration... from the Options drop-down menu in the top toolbar. The Options Administration window displays.
  2. Click the Save button; the options package is overridden.
  3. Click the OK button.
  4. Reopen the return.
  5. Select Properties... from the File drop-down menu in the top toolbar.
  6. Uncheck the CRA errors checkbox.
  7. Attempt EFILE of the return.
